A Love Affair with Food: "Today's Special"
Here is a movie that has this rare capacity to capture your spirits and transport you to a different world, for at least the duration of the movie. Today, I want to make a case for why you need to watch Today's Special.
"Today's Special" is a feel-good movie, which you would watch on a gloomy day under a blanket, and a few minutes into the movie, you will forget its gloomy out or gloomy inside. That's what a movie is supposed to do. Is it not?
The movie features both actors from India and the USA. Aasif Mandvi plays a sous chef at an upscale New York restaurant, whos dreams of becoming a chef is crushed and needs to find his calling. Aasif does a great job at playing a second-generation immigrant, who is torn between the American way of life and the life his parents envisioned for him.
His parents are played by Harish Patel, a seasoned Indian actor, and Madhur Jaffrey, an Indian-born actress, food and travel writer, and television personality. Indian acting legend, Naseeruddin Shah, plays the role of a catalyst, who influences the characters along in their search for self-realization.
Naseeruddin Shah's character will make you think and give you those cheers on your gloomy day. Aasif's love interest is played by Jess Weixler and all the support actors play their part well.
This movie has all the tried and tested ingredients for a great movie. In the end, you will leave with a smile on your face and an urge to cook some good food!
